The Land of Jaldhaka

Gurgling down the slopes of Duars, the river Jaldhaka wants to talk to the tourists. If you want to listen to it, you will have to visit Jhalang-Bindu, small virgin hill stations to the north of Siliguri.

Starting from Siliguri along the Sevoke Road, crossing seven rivers – Tista, Lis, Ghis, Chel, Mal, Kurti and Murti, through the teakwood forests, one reaches the Khunia crossing. Taking the left turn, and traversing the railway-crossing of Chapramari Sanctuary, the road to Jhalang skirts the tea-gardens of Duars up the hills. Glimpses of elephants and other Himalayan fauna roaming freely within this protected woodland are common. Climbing up through this natural panorama of exotic Himalayan flora and wildlife, one reaches Gairibus. From this point, the Jaldhaka sings along the entire path to Jhalang - a small, beautiful village at the foothills of Samsing.

A hydel power plant has been built harnessing the current of Jaldhaka, but it has been only a few years since this place has attracted the attention of nature-loving tourists. So the natural beauty of this area has still not been spoilt. Jhalang is a quite, sleepy hamlet with only a few hotels and lodges. One can board at the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation’s bungalows beside the Jhalang falls. In the background are the charming Shaal forests and in front, the hills of beckon with promises of unknown mysteries. The scenic beauty is a feast for the eyes. This is an excellent spot to de-stress and unwind, away from the bustle of urban life. All necessary amenities for existence are available at the local market.

From Jhalang, a jeep can be hired to Dolgaon, if the road has not been damaged by the monsoon rains. The tourist attraction here includes an herbal garden where various medicinal herbs like Ipecac, Diascorea, Rauwolfia etc. are available.

Almost 12 km to the north of Jhalang, at the end of the bus route, lies Bindu – the last village within the Indian frontier. Beyond, the soaring mountains guard the entrance to Bhutan. The colorful, picturesque beauty of this dreamland takes one’s breath away. The greenery all around gives the impression of perennial spring season. On the way to Bindu are the villages Paren, Godok and Today, famous for cardamom plantations. The river current of Jaldhaka is extremely high at Bindu. After Independence the first Hydro Power Station of India was built here under Jaldhaka Project. The river-bed is strewn with huge boulders. A bird’s-eye view of Bhutan can be obtained from the apex of the Gialbo hills, about ten minutes’ trek from Bindu. The only place to lodge at Bindu is Shivaji Tourist Inn. The splendor of the valley bathed in moonlight in the night dazzles the eyes of the travelers.

A trip to Jhalang-Bindu is excellent for getting away from the mundane city-life and relaxing the mind.
