Jaldapara Wldlife Sanctuary – Home of the One-horned RhinosJaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary was made in 1941 for the conservation of exotic and threatened Himalayan wildlife, mainly one-horned Rhinoceros, an endangered species. It is located at al altitude of 61 metres, in Alipurduar Subdivision of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal, about 124 km from Siliguri. The sanctuary is bathed by the river Torsha and its tributaries. The predominant fauna is savannah, comprising of tall elephant grasses. The fauna, in addition to one-horned Rhinos, include Royal Bengal Tigers, wild Elephants, Deer, Sambar, Barking Deer, Spotted Deer and Hog Deer, wild Pig, Bisons (Gaur) and a variety of birds, many still unknown. The place is a paradise for bird-watchers. The authorities can arrange for elephant rides for touring the sanctuary. The best time for viewing the wildlife is at dawn. The best time for visiting Jaldapara is October to May, especially March & April, when new grass grows. The sanctuary remains closed from 15th June to 15th September. To reach Jaldapara by rail, the tourists have to get down at Madarihat, the nearest railway station, only 7km from the sanctuary. Jaldapara Tourist Lodge is at a walking distance from this railway station. However, only passenger trains stop here. The mail and Express trains stop at Birpara/Hasimara railway stations, both are 20 km from the sanctuary. By road, Jaldapara is connected with Darjeeling and Siliguri. North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Bhutan Govt. Mini Buses and Private Buses are ply regularly from Siliguri to Alipurduar via Madarihat. The nearest airport is Bagdogra. The Hollong Forest Lodge and the Jaldapara Tourist Lodge can be reached from Madarihat by rented vehicles.
