The road to Chapramari Sancturay from Siliguri down the National Highway 31 turns left from the Khunia crossing, cuts through the Mahananda sanctuary and courses upwards in the direction of the majestic Chapmari Range of the Eastern Himalayas. The forest tract traverses the deep jungles. The dense foliage creates an overhead canopy that shields the forest floor from the reach of sunlight. The predominant vegetation is tropical deciduous, comprising of the tall Sal and Shegun (Teak) trees. The lush green tea plantataions soothes the eyes and enthralls the mind. The marked silence of the Sanctuary, occasionally broken by the chirpings of the birds, is imposing. Tourists can stay at the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Bunglow within this forest haven. Rations have to bought and carried from Siliguri. The amenities of city-life are not available. There is a watch-tower with glass walls that enable the visitors to sit within and enjoy the enticing natural beauty around, and view the wildlife as well. The diverse flora of this sanctuary comprises of Asian elephants, Indian bison or Gaur, leopard, Himalayan lengur, spotted deer and wild boars. If one is lucky, sighting of the Royal Bengal Tiger can also occur. Birds like the Black Stork, Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Dollarbird, Green-billed Malkoha, Asian Barred Owlet, Barred Cuckoo Dove, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon, Black Baza, Collared Falconet, Blue Rock Thrush, Rufous-bellied Niltava, White-rumped Shama, Northern Hill Myna, Sultan Tit, Black-crested Bulbul, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Streaked Spiderhunter and such others are common in the area. The Chapmari Sanctuary is a perfect weekend gate away for reviving the weary soul. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri. Chapramari is 129 km from Siliguri. Jeeps can be rented.
