Female Membership at Hindu Matrimonial Sites

For women in Asian cultures, waiting to get married is not an accepted practice as it is in American culture. This means that the marriage crunch still exists. And this page represents our first attempt to analyze marriage, women, and probability. We are not aware of any other entity analyzing Asian women as we have on our site, so if you find them, please email us and we will list your findings on this site.

We started by checking the database of registrants at Shaadi.com to see the membership percentage versus age. This is the graph that we created.

We analyzed Hindu females across a sample set of castes and religions. This graph contains all women whether they were a) single, b) widowed, c) divorced, etc. If we were to only include women from Group A, we predict that the downward slope starting at age 28 would be more pronounced and the percentages of people over 40 would have been statistically near 0.

Largest Increase in Membership
Between the ages of 22 and 23 showed the highest gains in female membership. Although 23 is not the most prevalent age, it indicates that women start thinking of marriage the most when they become 23 years old. This makes sense considering the fact that women going to college for studies would have generally graduated in the 22-23 year old time frame. With limited opportunities in India for women, they seek life partners.

Largest Percentage of Members
Based on our statistical sampling, the most common age women started looking for a partner was split evenly between 25 and 26. The age 25 represents a quarter-century and old school Asian parents want their daughters to either be married by then or to be looking.

Largest Decrease in Membership
The largest decrease in membership occurs from age 26 to age 27. This seems to suggest that while age 26 is the most common age for women to be online, that it also represents the most common age for women to get married. Since the majority of women seem to be seeking life partners around the age of 25, they are getting married by 27.

Women Over 40
Although this has no bearing on the likelihood of a woman getting married, only 3% of the women sampled were over the age of 40. Statistically insignificant.

It is a fact that as you age, your chances of getting married decrease. There has been a lot of debate as far as defining this probability but because it is near impossible to quantify how the future will play out, most studies produce horrible results. The marriage crunch prediction by Newsweek stated that women over 30 only have a 20% chance of getting married.

Shortcomings of Our Research
Our analysis only concerns ourselves with the women on matrimonials sites. Women who fall into this category are generally more educated and independent than the average woman in India. Our conclusion was women going to college seek life partners after they graduate at around 23 but for the women that has no no educational opportunities and no internet access, they would probably start seeking partners as soon as they were legal to do so: 18. So any conclusions from our research must be put into context with which the research was done.
