Asking Questions Obviously on the ProfileIf you're still getting to know someone you've met online, or perhaps it's your first time chatting, there are some standard topics that most people include in their conversation. Some folks discuss previous relationships, while others talk about benign subjects like movies and books. Pets, favorite sports, and other similar topics are also often first-email conversation. However, many of these things can also be found on most dating profiles. Favorite movies, favorite sports, favorite books and pets are often things people post on their online dating profile. And although it's appropriate to ask about these things, it's not appropriate to ask for the exact same information that's on the profile. For example, say the online profile includes favorite movies, and your potential date has listed "Rocky movies." It would be appropriate in your conversation to say, "I loved the 'Rocky' movies, too! Have you seen any other boxing movies recently?" It would not be appropriate, however, to say, "So, what's your favorite movie?" Asking a question that already appears on someone' profile makes you look as if you care more about appearances than truly getting to know someone. It may also make you appear lazy, since people may assume you didn't even bother to read their profile. In general, your best bet is to thoroughly read the profile and then create questions based on what you've read. This shows that you care enough to learn about your potential date, and that you've taken the time to carefully consider their profile.
