Defining "The Marriage Crunch"

Definition, Accuracy, Impact, Relevance to Asian Cultures

The “Marriage Crunch” was a popular thing in the 80s. During this decade, there was an article that came out in Newsweek about single women over thirty who were unmarried. There was an experiment done with 14 women. The story detailed these women and their lifestyles and concluded that women over the age of thirty were “more likely to be killed by a terrorist” than be married.

The article stated that once a woman hit thirty, the odds of her ever marrying was only 20%. When the single woman hit thirty-five and still was not married, he chances were said to go down to 5%.

When this hit the stands, it did cause controversy, and for good reason. Unmarried women over the age of thirty were appalled and the rest of the world was a little skeptical as well. Of course, experts claim that if it weren’t for that vulgar and inaccurate statement, there would likely be little remembered about the original “Marriage Crunch” article. So, in all truth, it was the sloppy journalistic style, which included the statement about women over thirty, that kept this article and idea alive for so many years.

Of course, with women today being more independent than ever and staying single longer than before, it can be assumed the original “Marriage Crunch” prediction was an inaccurate prediction of the future. Even though this is the case, there are few women who have forgotten the article and even today’s journalists often recall it as one of the most influential and remembered articles of all time.
