The original article was the one that stated single women had very little chance of getting married after the age of 30. Although the journalist that wrote the article probably had a great time unintentionally tearing apart the hopes and dreams of many single older women of the world, the article itself had an impact on almost every female who read it. The truth is that a few months after the article was published, therapists did notice more patients bringing it up in sessions. Many therapists stated they felt the article placed more stress on women who already felt out of place in society. In the 80s, when the original article was written, single women over 30 were typically considered homosexual or looked at as old maids. The article only exasperated these issues. Over time, the theory the article was based around was in fact proven to be very inaccurate. However, the impact initially may have caused more women to think about rushing into unhealthy marriages. In fact, since they were truly one of the first generations to be independent as women, it may have changed more than the author first intended. All in all, the “Marriage Crunch” has little effect on the women of today however. Women today realize that waiting until after 30 to get married is often the smartest move they can make. In addition, it seems that women older than 30 are likely to make their marriages work because they know themselves and what they want from life and a partner. |
