Susumu Terajima was born in Tokyo in 1963. In 1986, Terajima made his first appearance in feature film with Aho-mansu, which marked the directorial debut for actor Yusaku Matsuda. Cast in numerous films, he steadily forwarded his career. But it was after he met Kitano and was cast in Violent Cop that he was recognized widely amongst cinephiles. With A Scene at the Sea (1991) and Sonatine (1993), his performances were highly praised and Terajima is now one of the indispensable actors to Kitano's films. In 1994, he appeared in Go Riju's Elephant Song, which won the Net Pack Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 1996, he played the lead for the first time in his 10-year acting career in Makoto Shinozaki's first feature
