Respect – The Basis of Indian Culture

Culture can be called as the manner of living of an entire civilization. It encompasses the codes of conduct, dress, language, religion, beliefs and rituals, behavioral characteristics such as law and ethics. India is one of the most populated countries of the world, with a population higher than 1 billion. It is impossible to speak of any one Indian culture, even though there are profound cultural continuities that bind its people as one. Thus Indian Culture is unique and rich in its diversity.

The manner in which the Indians communicate with one another is a significant aspect of our culture. The Indians have urbanized their lifestyles and modernized due to exposure to Western cultures. But even today the values and beliefs deep-seeded within Indian communities are inherently traditional.

In India, guests are revered as God. Even strangers are received with warmth and welcomed as a part of the family. Respect for elders is an integral part of Indian culture. The heads of the joint families that exist even in these days of nuclear families are honored. Their ideologies are esteemed. Touching the feet of the elders is a mark of love and respect for age and wisdom, and a request for their blessings.

The custom is inculcated within the youngsters from their childhood. People greet each other in India by joining the palms of their hands together, bowing down in front of the other person, and saying Namaste, Namaskar, or Pranam. Indians believe that the Lord resides within every human being. This joining of hands implies deferential Salutations and the union of two souls. It also symbolizes humility and submission to the omnipresent Supreme Being.
