Indian FilmsHindi films have become an integral part of the Indian culture today. Mumbai is the heart of the film-industry in India, lovingly called as “Bollywood”. The other focal points of cinematic excellence in India include regional film industries are the Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. The total number of films produced per year is considered to be the highest in the world. Indian movies are called “masala” films, with songs and dances forming an essential part of the intricate, often melodramatic plots. Love angles, comedy and action-packed sequences blended into a three hour long extravaganza with intermission appeal to the masses. These add to the entertainment factor of the movie, often made with the audience in the rural and small town areas in mind. Some of the formulaic components that are recurrently utilized include parents opposing calf-love, caste differences between lovers, crooked politicians, scheming villains, self-sacrificing courtesans, siblings separated at birth and reunited by miracle, and handy happenstances. Dramatic twists in the plot rivet the attention of the viewers. Bollywood is making its presence felt all over the globe, and enjoy huge box office turnovers in Europe and the U.S. Exposure to world cinema is marking the advent of a sea-change in audience tastes in modern times. Some movies deviate from the run-of-the mill trends. Movies are nowadays being made with less melodramatic, practical themes which the audience can identify with their day-to-day life in the real world. Even songless movies have been produced that have been well received. Fil-makers are daring to exploit urbane, innovative and even bold subjects that cater to niche audiences who throng the multiplexes. The Indian film industry has advanced well beyond the eras of the silent talkies of yesteryears.
