Hinduism is the religion with the third largest following: there are about 900 million Hindus worldwide. The religion has many festivals that are celebrated with a lot of fervor and passion. Some of the key Hindu festivals are Diwali, Holi, Navaratri (celebrating fertility and harvest), Raksha Bandhan (celebrating the bond between brother and sister) and Janmashtami (Lord Krishna's birthday). During these festivals, Hindus visit temples and offer obeisance to the gods. Puja (worship) takes place in the Mandir (temple). Mandirs are found in every city in India, and may vary in size from small village shrines to large buildings.

Hinduism believes that there is only one supreme Absolute called "Brahman". However, it does not advocate the worship of any one particular deity. The gods and goddesses of Hinduism amount to thousands or even millions, all representing the many aspects of Brahman. Therefore, this faith is characterized by the multiplicity of deities. The most fundamental of Hindu deities is the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - creator, preserver and destroyer respectively. Hindus also worship spirits, trees, animals and even planets.

Since Hinduism is the dominant faith of India, all Hindu festivals are celebrated in this country. Religion is a way of life in India, and Hinduism forms an integral part of the entire Indian tradition. Festivals provide an opportunity for family members and friends to forget their differences and unite, irrespective of caste, creed or other differences.
