It marks the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. Ugadi term is used for the festival in the state of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. However people of Maharashtra term the same festival observed on the same day as Gudi Padwa. The same day is also celebrated by the Sindhis, people from Sindh, as their New Year day.Thy call it Cheti Chand. Since the hindu calender is a lunisolar calendar Ugadi falls on different day every year. The day is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka with gathering of the extended family and then a sumptuos meal. However the celebratios first begins with ritual showers and prayers. It is then followed by eating a specific mixture of some flowers and their juices making up all the six taste (bitter, sweet, vagaru, salty, sour and chilly). This mixture is called Bevu Bella in kannada and Ugadi Pachhadi in Tamil. All six taste is to symbolize the fact that life is a mixture of pleasure and pain and therefore both should be accepted together with equanimity. Though preparation of the mixture may differ from state to state , the symbolism and significance of the preparation is the same. Other events such as literary discussions, poetry recitations and cultural programs also mark the celebration of the festival. Authors of literary works are also recognised during this event through awards. |
