It is a Hindu festival for celebrating the first day of spring, the time when the crops, especially the mustard crop, are golden yellow in India.A time when the fresh growing life is ready to explode in the countryside.Yellow is consided to be the most positive color in the Hindu faith.The color represents spirituality in different ways and levels. The festival is celebrated in late january or early february, which according to the Hindu lunar calendar, corressponds to the fifth day of the month of Magha.

Saraswati is also the goddess of art and music.As the daughter of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga, she is beleived to give the power of of speech, wisdom and learning to human beings.. The swan represents Sattwa Guna which means purity and discrimination..
