Ram Navami in 2010 is on Wednesday, the 24th of March.

Ramanavami occurs on the ninth day of the Hindu lunar year and is alo called Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami. It is one of the most important hindu festival and marks the celebration of the birthday of the Hindu god Rama. Kalyanotsavam (marriage celebration) is performed for small murtis of Rama and Sita by the devotees in their houses.The diety is then taken to a procession on the streets at the end of the day.The end of the nine-day utsavam, Chaitra Navaratri, as called in Maharashtra or Vasanthothsavam, as called in Andhra Pradesh, also falls on this day.The date of the Lord Rama birthday has been said to be Feb 10 5010 B.C by the astrologers.They claim to have predicted the date by using the epics along with the placement of the stars..

Kalyanam,Panakam and Procession of idols are some of the highlights of the day. Kalyanam is the ceremonial wedding of the idols performed in the temple by the priests in Bhadrachalam, which is on the banks of the river Godavari in Khammam district. Panakam is a sweet drink prepared with jaggery and pepper on this day.Procession of the idols is carried out at the end of the day and is accompanied with play of colors and water

The Hindus devotees fast on this day or atleast restrict themselves to a specific diet. Readings of the Ramayana take place at the temples which are nicely decorated. Sita, who is the Lord Ram`s wife, is also prayed to by the devotees of Lord Rama.The others who are also prayed to are Laxman , who was Lord Ram brother and went to exile with him for 14 years and Hanuman who is the monkey god and a loyal servant of Lord Rama.
