Navratri is a festival of nine nights. It begins on the bright fortnight of the first day of Ashwina. Goddess Durga, Vijayashtami and Mahanavami are worshipped on the 8th and the 9th day. Texts such as Devi Mahatmya, which invoke the goddesses who vanquished evil demons, are cited. The 10th day of Ashwina, that is the day after the Navaratri, is celebrated as the festival Dussera. Dussera is the celebration of the Lord Rama victory over the King Ravana.It is celebrated by carrying out acts on stages or in grounds where large crowds gather to watch especially the burning of the effigy of King Ravana. Often these giant effigies are stuffed with fireworks and then shot at with a burning arrow by the person playing Lord Rama in the act. The word Navaratri means nine nights in Sanskrit. These nine nights are to worship female divinity. It is also the largest festival; of Nepal. During these nine days, nine goddesses are worshipped, which are Durga, Bhadrakali, Amba, Annapurna, Sarvamangala, Bhairavi, Chandika, Lalita and Bhavani The nine days of navaratri is divided in the sets of three days. The first three days are invoking the spiritual force called the goddess Durga for destroying all our impurities and defects. The second set of three days, are mainly for the Goddess Lakshmi who has the power of giving her devotees wealth. The last three days are for worshipping the goddess of knowledge, Saraswati. Another famous event during these nine days is the Garba dance, which is mainly performed in the state of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
