These four locations are Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Kumbh mela basically is the pilgramge for the hindus. Prayag holds the Maha (great) Kumbh mela once every twelve years. This mela is attended by millions of people. It also witnesses the largest gathering anywhere in the world. King Harshvardhana of Ujjain started this cylce of pilgramage. He would attend the mela himself and would give away all his wealth to the poor and learned people of all religions. The legend behind Kumbh Mela is as follows. During the Vedic period which was thousand of years ago, both gods and demons decided to work together on the nector of immortality, known as the amrit. The churning of the amrit was to be done from the primordial ocean of milk, the Ksheera Sagara .The nector was to be shared equally among the gods and demons. However, the demons ran away with the urn (kumbh) containing the nector once the churning of the nector was complete. They were chased by the gods. The fight between the gods and the demons over the nector continued for twelve days and twelve nights. This time period is equivalent to twelve human years. It is believed that the drops of amrit fell over four places during the fight. These places are Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Kumbh Mela is therefore observed at these four locations where the nectar fell. |
