"Kojagara ", literally means the night of awakening. It is one of the most important festivals of Central India, particularly the Budelkand region. This ceremony owes its origin to the Kojagari Purnima Vrat sacred to the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra on this night. The devotees observe fast the whole day, which is only broken at night after worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra. Before breaking the fast, it is also customary to offer coconut water and flattened rice to the Gods. The people of this region consider this a very auspicious occasion, since it is believed that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi blesses her devotees with fortune and prosperity. Many people believe that on Kojagari, Laxmi moves about from house to house asking, "Who is awake?" ("Kojagarti?") and shows her pleasure on those she finds awake. People sit in the moon light singing songs, or keep themselves entertained in some other way. The celebrations continue throughout the night and at dawn, the people finally retreat to their homes, secure in the knowledge that they were awake when the Goddess visited their home. The Kojagari festival also coincides with the auspicious event of the harvest festival. From this day the new grain of the harvest is usually eaten. It is also an age-old tradition to play dice on this day. The whole custom of keeping awake and playing dice may be to signify that one should be alert and careful in life with one's savings. It is also believed that playing dice on this day brings good luck. |
