Karwa Chauth is the celebration of the bond between husbands and wives. It is a Hindu festival in which women fast for the long life and well-being of their husbands. The festival is celebrated on the fourth night after the full Moon in the month of kartik in the Hindu calendar, Strictly speaking, the woman is not supposed to eat anything until the moon comes out at night. It is only after the moon comes out and she has performed her prayers, that she can have her meal. However, this tradition is not always followed since on occasions, the moon is not visible until very late at night due to cloudy conditions. In urban areas, it is common to see women dressed up in their most beautiful saris and jewelry on Karwa Chauth day. At nightfall, they are sent to the roof-top to see if the moon is visible; and if it is sighted, the news spreads quickly through the neighborhood, and women are seen making their way to the rooftop, where an offering of water and flowers renders the worship complete. In certain regions, the fast breaking ceremony is also quite an elaborate affair. In Punjab, for example, it is customary to eat food called sergi sent by her mother-in-law. Sometimes, the fast breaking ceremony involves looking at the moon through a sieve, and then looking at the husband's face. Nowadays, Karwa Chauth is more of a fun festival than a serious affair as in olden times. The festivities surrounding Karwa Chauth encourage people to gather and socialize with friends and family, exchange gifts and invite people for meals. The gifts exchanged on this occasion reflects brightness and happiness of a married life. |
