Hanuman Jayanti is the celebration of the birthday of Hanuman Ji, the monkey God. Hanuman is worshipped for his unyielding devotion to Lord Rama, the protagonist of the Ramayana. Lord Hanuman is well-known for his selfless acts in the face of adversity and his immense strength. In the Ramayana, Hanuman is believed to have leapt to Sri Lanka across the ocean in his quest to recover Sita from the clutches of Ravana. In Lord Hanuman's own words in the Ramayana, he said "I am a humble messenger of Sri Rama. I have come here to serve Rama, to do His work". Throughout the Ramayana, Hanuman is projected as a symbol of such virtues as integrity, valor, intelligence, strength, patience and wisdom. Whenever a problem arises, he is the first to offer a practical solution. When Hanuman finally located Sitaji in the Ramayana, he is believed to have first tried to soothe and gain her trust, since she did not know that he was a messenger of Lord Rama who was sent to rescue her. To overcome her fears, he recited tales of Lord Ramchandraji's glory for Sitaji, which made her realize that Hanuman was indeed sent by her husband. On Hanuman Jayanti day, the sacred text called Hanuman Chalisa is recited. This text contains a set of prayers glorifying Hanuman and detailing his courageous acts. The text is sometimes recited non-stop for 24 hours. Special ceremonies are performed and offerings are made to Lord Hanuman. Colorful processions fill the streets and people carry idols of Lord Hanuman on the road. This is accompanied by chanting of prayers and merry-making. |
