Guru Purnima is traditionally celebrated on the day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh. Also known as Vyas Purnima, the day is celebrated in remembrance of the sage Ved Vyas. Ved Vyas was the great sage who classified the Vedas, wrote the eighteen Puranas and the Mahabharat. All of these texts are sacred to the Hindu faith and are believed to contain the origins of Hinduism in the world. On Guru Purnima day, the Guru is offered worship by his devotees. They are also supposed to introspect and obey the Guru's unvoiced wishes, commands, serving him as one would God and lauding his glory. Guru Ved Vyasa is the sage who classified the accumulated spiritual knowledge of the Vedas under four heads - Rig, Yajur, Saama and Atharva. He has also been given credit for composing the authentic treatise of Brahma-sootras to explain the background of Vedas. In addition, he wrote the eighteen Puranas, which in essence are stories of Hinduism's great heroes and saints. On Guru Purnima day, Hindus vow to instill a positive Hindu attitude towards life. The ceremonial worships are accompanied by monetary offering as well. These ceremonies are just a way of expression of this attitude of leading a more productive life. Devotional worship of the Guru is one of the most touching and elevating features of the Hindu cultural tradition. The auspicious moment of Vyasa Purnima, chosen for observing this annual festival, is one of the most significant events of the Hindu religion. |
