Gita Jayanti is the anniversary commemorating the day that the holy Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Lord Sri Krishna to Arjuna. The Bhagvad Gita is the holy book of the Hindus and it came into existence during the war between the Kurus and the Pandavas at Kurukshetra. To this day, there is a monument in the form of a chariot at Kurukshetra that pays homage to this historic event. It has been claimed that the tree that is next to this monument is a continuum growth of the original tree witness that was there at the actual day of speaking. The Gita was produced about six thousand years ago through Arjuna, an Indian prince, by Sri Krishna. The teachings of Lord Krishna are based on the Upanishads, the ancient classics of India. The Gita shows the way for millions of Hindus to lead their lives in a more productive and fulfilling manner. It teaches them how to rise above the world of duality and attain eternal bliss and immortality. It is a gospel that teaches the rigid performance of one's duty in society, and how to keep one's inner being unaffected by external factors. On Gita Jayanti day, devotees throng to Kurukshetra and recite Bhagavad Gita from early morning until the next morning. Various events are held to illustrate the history of the holy book. It is believed that the Gita is a source of power and wisdom, and strengthens people when they are weak. Its significance in Hinduism is not merely that of a book or a scripture; it is believed to carry an eternally vital and indispensable message to mankind. This is the reason that Hindus celebrate the festival of Gita Jayanti so passionately. |
