Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular of Hindu festivals. On this day, Hindus across the world celebrate the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god. The festival is observed on the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada (August-September). The festival is celebrated by making clay figures of the deity which are worshipped for two days. After the worship period is over, the figures are immersed in the river. Since Lord Ganesha is considered to be the most auspicious deity, everyone celebrates this festival with a lot of passion. On Ganesh Chaturthi day, Hindus meditate on the stories connected with Lord Ganesha early in the morning. After taking a bath, they go to the temple and do the prayers of Lord Ganesha. The lord is presented with coconut and sweet puddings, and people ask for forgiveness from him. They also pray for success and welfare of their families. It is also customary for Hindus not to look at the moon on that day; this tradition has its origins in a legend that the moon misbehaved with the lord. However, if someone does happen to look at the moon on this day, then it has to be followed by a repetition of the story of how Lord Krishna cleared Lord Ganesha's character. This is done to free the person of the "curse" of the moon. Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival inspiring devotees to inculcate redemptive virtues in their lives. Ganeshji is invoked first in all auspicious events, rites and rituals such as marriage, opening ceremonies, ground-breaking ceremonies, and so on. |
