Basant Panchami (also known as Basant) is known as the Festival of Spring, and is celebrated mainly in the northern Indian states of Haryana and Punjab. It is held every year in March to signal the end of winter and welcome spring. During this season, mustard fields are in full bloom, giving the impression of yellow carpets laid out on farms across Punjab and Haryana. People generally celebrate this festival by an abundance of yellow things, starting from wearing yellow clothes, flying kites and having yellow colored sweets. At night, people bring out their lanterns and searchlights and fly kites until they are exhausted. In Pakistan, there is no official Basant day; however, the kite flying season is a 24-hour spectacle in the city of Lahore. It is where Basant is celebrated with a lot of passion. Along with flying kites on rooftops, people here celebrate this festival by having dinner with guests and dancing late into the night. The streets, parks and the roof tops especially are filled with cries and cheers of "Bo Kata" or Kite down. In terms of fervor and zeal, the Basant festival is generally believed to be comparable to the Oktoberfest or the Rio Carnival. Preparation for this festival start many days earlier. In Haryana, sweet yellow rice flavored with saffron is prepared for Basant Panchami. This is one of the most popular delicacies of this festival.
