Anant Chaturdashi

Anant Chaturdashi 2010 is when?

Anant Chaturdashi is the last day of the Hindu festival of Ganeshotsav. It is generally the tenth or eleventh day after Ganesh Chaturthi, and all the idols of Lord Ganesh are immersed in the sea or nearby lakes and rivers. On this day, people travel to the waterfront with the idols in large processions. The immersion of the idol represents a see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Mt Kailash. The crowd chants the hymn of "Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya" (O father Ganesha, come again early next year). Generally, the festival is marked by free help for poor people in the form of free medical checkup, blood donation camps, charity, etc.

On this day, a huge life-like clay model of Lord Ganesha is placed on raised platforms for people to view and pay their homage. The priest then invokes life into the idol by performing the customary pranapratishhtha ritual . After this the shhodashopachara (16 ways of paying tribute) follows. Coconut, jaggery, trefoil blades and red flowers are offered to the deity. In most places in Maharashtra and Karnataka and in other states of India, the day witnesses loud and colorful processions of people taking Ganesha idols for immersion.

Anant Chaturdashi is the fourteenth day of the bright phase of the moon in the Indian lunar month of Bhadrapada. The belief is that if one maintains a vow in honor of Lord Vishnu on this day and keeps it for 14 years, it will bring immense wealth and spiritual benefit.
