Poli Holige Indian bread Maida flour

Poli or Holige are type of Indian dessert items made from flour based Indian bread or roti stuffed with jaggery, coconut, lentils, nutmeg, etc. They are traditionally prepared in the western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra as well as many southern states. It is called poli in Tamil Nadu, puran poli in Gujarat and maharashtra, holige in Karnataka and Obbattu in Andhra Pradesh.

The south indian holige is made from flour, grated coconut and jaggery. A mix of coconut and jaggery is used to stuff the roti. To make the stuffing, grated coconut is evenly mixed with powdered jaggery and then heated over medium flame. When the jaggery starts melting, nuts and cardamom is added to it. The mixture is churned at regularly so that the coconut evenly mixes with the jaggery. This stuffing is then used to stuff the roti and served with a tsp of ghee.
