It is similar to another dish called rabri, a delicacy in many parts of north india. Basundii is a sweet, condensed milk based dish made by boiling the milk on low heat for a long time till it becomes dense and changes its color to pinkish. Sugar , spices and nuts are added to it to give it a great taste. It is chilled and served as dessert. Basundi is easy to make at home and can serve as a tongue licking dessert. To make basundii you need one liter of whole milk(ie with full fat), half cup cream, sugar about cup or according to taste, cardamom powder - 1 tsp, almonds, pistachios and cashews, chopped and blanched, 10 saffron strands. Mix the saffron strands in 3 tsp of hot milk to get the saffron sauce. Now pour the milk in a pot and put to boil in high flame. Once it starts boiling, simmer down the flame and continue to boil. Keep stirring and boiling till the milk is two thirds of the original volume. Now add the ingredients and saffron sauce to the milk and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool down. Chill the dish and serve.
