Indian cuisine has a rich list of desserts or sweets. Sweets or Mithai as they are called in India, are an integral part of the Indian culinary experience. Sweets are a part of the culture and rich heritage of India. The are not just consumed as desserts, but are used as prashad, an offering to the deities or a gift item during the festivals.

Shondesh Milk based

Most of the Indian sweets are milk based and are very sweet. They come in various shapes, sizes as well as colors. The sweets are rich in raisins and dry fruits.

India is a large and diverse country and every region has its own specialty of sweets. These are as many varieties of sweets as there are cultures and festivals. Sweets are inherently associated with the various festivals in India.

Some of the most famous sweets of Northern India are motichur laddu, gajar halwa, peda, kaaju burfi, kheer, sohn papdi among others. The East is the sweet capital of India and Bengal Sweets are the most famous of the Indian sweets. Rasagolla, rasmalai, cham cham, mishti doi, raj bhog, maal pua, etc are some of the specialties of the Eastern India. Southern India is a big producer of coconuts and the sweets tend to be coconut and coconut milk based. Coconut burfi, payasam, mysore pak, kashi halwa, jaangiri are widely popular. Shrikhand, bhasundi, aamrakhand, puran puri, dhondas are the popular sweets of the Western Indian states.
