It is the most popular type of sandwich eaten in India. Sandwiches can be served in many forms. The basic form consists of a vegetable filling placed between two slices of white bread(not indian bread). The most commonly used vegetables are tomato, cucumber, onions and potato. Sandwiches may be toasted, grilled or plain. Almost all restaurants serve vegetable sandwiches. Grilled sandwiches are very popular among the urban youth. Sandwiches may have butter, cheese, sour cream and even mayonnaise, in which case it does not remain purely vegetarian. Variations in vegetable sandwiches galore and vary from vendor to vendor. To make a vegetable sandwich the vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, etc are cut into thin slices and placed between two slices of white bread, spread with butter, or cheese and green coriander chutney. It is then toasted in a sandwich toaster and served with tomato ketchup.
