Namkeen

Namkeen is a class of Indian snacks mostly fried and made of besan or gram flour. Namkeen word comes from the word namak meaning salt. As the name suggests, namkeens are salty.

There are various types of namkeens found all over India. Each region has its own specialty of namkeens. Rajasthan is very famous for its Bikaner Namkeens. Namkeens are very commonly available in Indian grocery shops, sweetmeat shops as well as in provision stores. There are various companies dealing with namkeen products. Even the international chips manufacturer Frito Lays, have a huge variety of namkeen products in their list. Other famous namkeen brand is Haldiram's whose namkeens are sold not only in India but exported to many countries.

Namkeens are basically salty snacks. There are a huge variety of namkeens in India. Some of the most famous are sev, aalo bhujia, mathri, aalo lacche, channa jor garam, moong dal, navratan mixture, kurkure, etc. Namkeens are mostly fried gram flour with spices or spiced and roasted wheat, grams or barley grains. Namkeens are very common tea time snacks. Though most are deep fried, the roasted ones are low on fat and very nutritious.
