Bhelpuri

Bhelpuri is a low-fat, nutritious and delicious snack made of Puffed rice and sev, a fried snack made from besan flour. The snack is synonymous with the beaches of Mumbai such as Chowpatty and India Gate in Delhi. It is a main dish of the chaat shops or indian snack shops.

Bhel Puri is available all across India and is known by different names such as Bhelpuri, Jhaal Muri, Muri, etc. .

The snack has almost an iconic status in North India. There is no chaat shop without it in its menu. The main ingredients are puffed rice and sev. To this are added finely cut tomatoes, onions and chilies. Some versions of the snack also include potatoes. Chutneys like tamarind and coriander are also added to give it a sweet or spicy flavour. It can be garnished with coriander leaves and a dab of lemon juice. It is spicy, tangy, sweet and sour in taste. The sour taste comes from two different chutneys ( sauce) that are added to it. One is made of green chili and mint and the other sweet chutney made of tamarind and amchur.

To make Bhelpuri, you need a few cups of puffed rice, roasted and salted peanuts, 2 boiled potatoes, 1 onion chopped fine, 1 large tomato chopped fine, half a bunch of coriander leaves chopped fine, 2 green chilies chopped fine, Tamarind chutney to taste, Mint-coriander chili chutney to taste, crushed papdi (these fried salty biscuits made from wheat flour) and 1 cup of sev.

Combine the peanuts, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, coriander leaves, chilies with the puffed rice and churn the mixture well. Mix it with tamarind and mint-coriander chutney to enhance the flavor. Mix well and garnish the Bhel Puri by sprinkling sev and papdi over it. Serve and eat immediately to prevent the dish from getting soggy.
