Jal jeera

Jal jeera is another very popular drink of India. It is known for its digestive and refreshing properties. Jaljeera or Cumin water not only quenches thirst but increases the appetite too.

Though readymade Jaljeera packets are readily available in India, it can be easity prepared it at home. Cumin seeds are roasted on a pan and grounded finely. A mint and cilantro leaf paste is then prepred. Now, in a bowl, with the above ingredients, Amchur or Dried Mango Powder, lemon juice, rock salt and a pinch of sugar is mixed. The resultant paste is then mixed with cold water (preferably iced water). Mint leaves are used for garnishing. The drink is served chilled.

The presence of cumin makes the drink an excellent stomach stimulant and lemon, salt and sugar provide the re hydrating effect of jaljeera. In the summers of India when the temperature reaches excess of 45 degrees, the drink is very effective to re hydrate the body and increase the appetite.

Jal jeera is also widely used as a filling for paani poori, a popular street snack in comprising of a round, hollow fried crisp called puris and filled with tamrind water of jaljeera.
