Indian beer

Beer brewing began in India during the British rule as there was great demand for beer by the British administrators and soldiers to counter the hot Indian climate. To service the huge demand a new style of beer was created called the India Pale Ale also known as IPA. IPA was founded by George Hodgson owner of the famous London brewery. IPA was strong beer with a long shelf life so that it could survive the long sea voyage to India without getting spoilt.

1820s Edward Dyer came to India and set up the first Indian brewery called Dyer Breweries in Kasauli, a town near Shimla(the summer capital of British India). The brewery produced Asia's first beer called Lion beer. The brewery was soon shifted to nearby town of Solan .

In 1855, H G Meakin, bought the Shimla and Solan Breweries from Edward Dyer and the Kasauli based brewery was re christened as Dyer Meakin Breweries. After independence in 1949, business man Mohan took over the company and the name was changed to Mohan Meakin Ltd in 1967. The company is still in existence and produces and markets beer all over India to this day. The Lion brand is still available in northern India. Other beer in its stable are Golden Eagle Lager, Old Monk 1000, Meakin 10,000 among others.
