Coca cola

Coca-Cola also known as Coke is the most common name associated with soft drinks in India as well as the world. Coke is a product of the worldwide known Coca-Cola Company. Coke is sold in stores, restaurants, hotels, dhabas and vending machines in every corner of India.

The recipe of Coca-Cola was first invented in 1885 in Atlanta, Georgia, by John S. Pemberton. It was originally called Pemberton's French Wine Coca. It was originally intended as a patent medicine. Coca-Cola was bought by Asa Griggs Candler, who had a keen sence of the product's commercial potential. The exact formula of Coca-Cola is not known to everyone and is a famous trade secret. The original copy of the formula for the cola mix is held in SunTrust Bank's main vault in Atlanta and is accessible to only two executives of the company.

Coca-Cola came to India in 1949 and the indian company, Pure Drinks Ltd. became the sole manufacturers as wellas distributors of Coke in India. In 1970's Coke was asked to leave the country. But in 1991, the then finance minister Dr. Manmohan Singh opened up the economy and let the door open for foreign companies to open shop in India. In 1993 Coca-Cola re-entered India after a huge gap of 16 years. Soon the market was ripe with competition with multinational rival Pepsi entering India too. To win the competition, Coca-Cola India bought Indian brands such as Limca, Thums-Up, Maaza and others. Coca cola and its products are leaders in many markets in India.

The company manufactures the concentrate for Coca-Cola, which is then sold to the bottlers. The bottlers produce the finished product and market it. The concentrate is mixed with treated water and sweeteners and emulsifiers and then sold in cans and bottles.

In 2003 and then again in 2006, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a New Delhi based non-governmental organizationi, found that soda drinks produced by most of the manufacturers in India, including Pepsi and Coca-Cola, had dangerously high levels of pesticides in their drinks, much higher than the interntionally accepted levels. Drink manufacturers like PepsiCo and The Coca-Cola Company state that their drinks are safe for consumption and have published numerous newspaper advertisements stating that the pesticide levels in their products are much lesser than those in other foods prepared from potable water such as tea. .
