Chakli savoury snack mixed grain flour

Chaklis are spicy, crunchy and pretzel shaped rings made from besan of gram flour. The dish is a specialty of Maharashtra. It is also prepared in various other parts of the country, specially in the southern states, where they are known as Murukku or Gatti Pakodeelu.

Chakli is associated with the festival of lights, Deepavali. Is is specially prepared on this day along with various types of sweets and served to the guests. Chakli is also a great tea snack. Its salty and crunchy and and much more nutritious than commercially produced chips or wafers.

Chakli is mostly prepared at home although commercial versions are also available. Nonetheless, nothing beats the flavor of fresh, home made chaklis. These are made using a batter of gram and rice flour which is deep fried in oil. The unique shape of the chaklis comes from the mould that is used specially to prepare chaklis. Turmeric and red chili powder is often added for extra flavor and color.
