The West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences was established in 1995. The University was mainly established to give emphasis on education, research and extension in the field of Veterinary & Animal Science, Dairy Technology and Fishery sciences. Prior to establishment of this University, the century old Bengal Veterinary College, established in the year 1893 at this campus, used to impart the veterinary education for the state.
The University is undertaking various need based research programs and planning to establish different Regional Research and Extension Centers on various Agro-Ecological Zones of the State. The University consists of following three faculties: Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science, Faculty of Dairy Technology, and Faculty of Fishery Sciences. These faculties conduct basic and applied research in their respective fields for advancement of knowledge and enhancement of productivity.
The University offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Veterinary Sciences, Dairy Technology, and Fishery Sciences. Some of the programs offered are: B.V.Sc. & A.H. 5 years Integrated Course, M.V.Sc 2 years P.G. Course, B.Tech (DT) 4 years Integrated Course, M.Tech.(DT) 2 years P.G. Course, B.F.Sc. 4 years Integrated Course, and M.F.Sc. 2 years P.G. Course.
The Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms is established for monitoring Research, Extension and Farm activities under this University. The Directorate comprises of three wings i.e., Research, Extension and Farms. Different Extension Programs are undertaken for disseminating the adaptable technologies to the fields. One District Extension Centre and One Rural Extension Centre has been established under this University.
