The Visva Bharati University is situated in located at Santiniketan, West Bengal. In May 1951, Visva-Bharati was declared to be a Central University and "An Institution of National Importance" by an Act of Parliament. It was granted the status of a unitary, teaching and residential university.
The University offers Bachelor’s Master’s, and Research level degree programs. The subject areas include Arts, Science, Physical Education, Fine Arts, Agricultural Sciences, and Social Work. Diploma and certificate courses are offered in a number of languages like Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Marathi, Oriya, Russian, Sanskrit, Tamil, Tibetan, and Urdu. 2 years certificate courses are offered in leather craft, Book binding and handmade packaging, Batik work, and handmade paper making.
The Music Education Committee of the University makes all possible arrangements for the teaching of Rabindra Music in Kolkata. The Committee has power to give recognition to music schools and organizations as affiliated institutions for this purpose. The committee organizes music festivals and recitals of the works of Rabindranath Tagore, for their promotion and diffusion.
The National Cadet Corps for Senior Division Boys was introduced in Visva-Bharati in the year 1950-51, almost with the inception of NCC in India. Visva-Bharati NCC has been under taking a good number of extracurricular activities like para-sailing, excursion to any Army Contingent, outdoor exercises, cycle expedition social services, ceremonial parade and various other camps and courses. Some cadets have represented the university in the Republic Day parade at Delhi and won many awards there.
