Vidyasagar University was established in 1981 after the name of educationist and social worker Pandit Iswar Chandra Bandyopadhyay, known as Vidyasagar. The University Grants Commission accorded recognition to the University in 1990. The university is an affiliating institution and has its jurisdiction over Midnapore District. It affiliates a total of 39 colleges in the district.
The college has faculties of Science, Arts and Commerce, and Management. Undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses are offered in Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Applied Mathematics with Oceanography and Computer Programming, Bengali, English, Geography, Electronics, Computer Applications (MCA degree), Aquaculture and Management Technology, Remote-sensing and GIS, Social Work, and Business Administration (MBA).
The Central Library of the University is one of the central facilities used by all types of members and ex – members of this University. Apart from the Central Library, there are eleven departments who maintain their separate departmental libraries. The library has fully computerized its most of the active documents which are now available to users through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) with network access across the campus-wide LAN. The Digital Library provides electronic access to CDROM databases in various areas of Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities.
NSS programs are implemented at the colleges affiliated to the university and Post-Graduate departments of the university. Special Camping programs are theme-oriented and are organized generally on various developmental issues of national importance. In the past, the themes of the Special Camping Programs have been ‘Youth against Famine’, ‘Youth for Rural Reconstruction’, ‘Youth for Mass Literacy’, and ‘Youth for National Integration and Social Harmony’.
