The University of North Bengal was established by Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962. It is located near Siliguri in Darjeeling District. The University has played a pioneering role in spreading higher education within the predominantly rural areas that comprise its vast jurisdictional territory. The University gets students and scholars from adjoining areas in Bihar and the North Eastern states, as also from SAARC countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
Over 36,000 undergraduate students and over 1500 postgraduate students and scholars now enroll at different courses under the University during any given year. Some of the subjects taught at undergraduate level include Bengali, English, Nepali, Hindi, Urdu, Political Science, Economics, Philosophy, History, Sociology, Education, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The University has three postgraduate faculties: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Arts, Commerce & Law, and Faculty of Medicine.
North Bengal University, through its directorate of distance education, provides quality post graduate and under graduate courses to students. M.A. courses in English, Bengali, Nepali, History, Political Science, Philosophy, and Mathematics have been introduced from 2000-01 session. B.A. General Course is offered with any of the above subject choices.
National Service Scheme has been functioning at the University of North Bengal since 1982. All programs of the NSS are controlled and coordinated from the office of the Program Coordinator. Both regular activities and special camping programs are undertaken by the NSS units under this university. As per NSS manual, a volunteer renders 120 hours of service to the society as a member of the NSS unit.
