The University of Burdwan was established on 15th June, 1960. In the initial phase, only the humanities section began to function. Later, mainstreams of science faculties were included. There are now about 22 Post-graduate departments in various disciplines. The University Institute of Technology has recently been established under the direct control of this University with the approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The university offers courses on diverse disciplines. These include Physical Education, B.Ed., Foreign Languages, Computer Applications, and Population Education. There is also an Adult Continuing Education Center and the Academic Staff College. These centers are meant for the benefit of the teachers of the University. The university also has a Distance Education Wing which imparts post-graduate education in different subjects, as well as in some professional courses at under-graduate level.
The university actively patronized the construction of a Science Centre and a Planetarium, named as Meghnad Saha Planetarium. The University has established a Rural Technology Centre in the name of Shri Binoy Krishna Choudhury (an ex-minister of the Government of West Bengal) to impart vocational training and create scope of self-employment for the rural youth. There are plans for building up of a center of creative art also.
The Computer Centre of the university provides computer laboratory facilities for several PG teaching departments. The University Health Center provides outdoor service along with emergency management for the students and scholars. Part time services are available in Ultrasonography, Pathology, Ophthalmology, and Physiotherapy. Immunization services are also provided by the Health Center.
