Rabindra Bharati University is one of the five universities in the city of Kolkata. It was founded on May 8, 1962, to mark the birth centenary of the poet Rabindranath Tagore. The university offers courses in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
The various courses of study include D. Litt (in all subjects), Ph.D. (in all subjects), M. Phil. (two-year course) in Bengali, English, Philosophy and Sanskrit; M.A. (two-year course), Master of Visual Arts (two-year course), B.A. (Honors, three-year course), B.A. (Special Honors, two-year course), Bachelor of Education (one-year course), Bachelor of Library & Information Science (one-year course), and Bachelor of Visual Arts (five-year course). Certificate and Diploma courses are also offered in the fields of Tagore Literature, Sanskrit, Rabindra Sangeet, Instrumental Music, Dance, Drama, and Percussion.
The Rabindra Bharati University Library caters to the information needs of the faculty, research scholars, students, and non-teaching staff. The University has 21 libraries. Apart from the large Central Library, and the one at Jorasanko Campus, the University has 17 Departmental Libraries under the faculty of Arts, Fine Arts and Visual Arts. User education programs in different phases for library users are organized periodically, to get them acquainted with the library collection and technology.
The West Bengal State Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts, has become an integral part of the University. The Akademi is actively engaged in the promotion of study, training, research and extension of various branches of performing and Visual Arts including folk art and culture in Bengal.
