Netaji Subhas Open University, Kolkata, is a premier State Open University in India. It was established in 1997 and is recognized by the UGC. The University provides education to the disadvantaged sector of the rural community and minorities. The Study Centers of the University provide for widening the scope of several vocational, professional & online courses in addition to its existing courses. The University receives financial assistance from the State Government towards its maintenance and developmental activities.
The University offers Bachelor's Degree leading to B.A., B.Com and B.Sc. Degrees. The programs include Foundation Courses, one in Humanities and Social Science (FHS) and other Science and Technology (FST) apart from foundation courses in languages consisting of Bengali (FBG) and English (FEG). PhD programs have been introduced in 2004 in the following areas: Arts, Science, Mathematics, Geography, Environmental Science, Commerce, Management, Computer Sciences, Distance Education, and Interdisciplinary subjects. Diploma courses are offered in Consumer Affairs, Small Business Management, Medical Laboratory Technology, Yoga Therapy, Basic & Advanced Photography, and Advertising & Public Relations.
The University conducts its work with 150 Study Centers. The methodology of instruction in this University is different from that of conventional universities. The Open University system is more learner-oriented, and the learner participates actively in the teaching process. Most of the instructions are imparted through distance education methodology rather than face-to face communication. Instructions are imparted through self-instructional study materials and Personal Contact Program (PCP). The PCP is generally held on Saturdays and Sundays. The University follows a multimedia approach for its instruction.
