The Institute of Company Secretaries of India has been constituted to develop and regulate the profession of Company Secretaries in India. It was in 1960 that the Company Law Board started a course in company secretaryship leading to the award of Government Diploma in company secretaryship. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India is a premier national professional body (imparting education primarily through distance learning).
The ICSI, besides conducting Company Secretaryship examinations, enrolling qualified students as members after practical training, exercises professional supervision over the members in matters pertaining to professional ethics and Code of Conduct. It organizes professional development and brings out research publications, guidance notes, secretarial standards as well as professional monthly journal `Chartered Secretary' for corporate executives The ICSI also regularly interacts with Government, regulatory bodies and chambers of commerce and industry on policy and professional matters.
The Institute's Headquarters and its Regional Councils offer placement services to members as well as students who have passed the Intermediate or Final Examinations of the Institute. Under the scheme, names of the candidates are sponsored to prospective employers on request. Information is imparted to the visiting members on the various vacancies for Company Secretaries on All India Basis. Requests from several organizations are urgently attended to.
In a recent arrangement, Asia's IT Training leader, NIIT has started training students and members of The Institute of Company Secretaries of India. Called "Understanding Information Technology in the Corporate Environment," the task-oriented special program trains students and existing members of ICSI on high-end personal computing skills.
