Indian Statistical Institute is a unique institution devoted to the application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences. Founded in 1931, the institute gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. Research in Statistics and related disciplines is the primary activity of the Institute. Teaching activities are undertaken mainly in Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore.
Indian Institute of Statistics has a long tradition of excellence in training, teaching and research in a number of academic disciplines including statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, biology, geology, physics and social science. It attracts some of the brightest minds from all over India, and its alumni have made outstanding contributions to academics, governance and industry.
The Applied Statistics Division, the Physics and Earth Sciences Division, the Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research Division, and the Biological Sciences Division have their own laboratories and workshops. For instance, M.Tech students who are from the statistics stream are given practical training in engineering workshop techniques at the M.Tech laboratories, which consist of the Electronics & Electrical Laboratory, the Machine Shop & Metrology Laboratory, and the Material Testing Laboratory.
The Library, Documentation and Information Science Division comprise the Central Library at Kolkata, two major libraries at Delhi and Bangalore Centers and the Documentation Research and Training Centre at Bangalore. The Division is perhaps the most important central facility and occupies a unique place in academic and research activities of the Institute. The network of ISI libraries provides different services including reference service, circulation, and current awareness service.
