Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata was established in 2001 by Kalyan Bharti Trust, a conglomerate of like-minded industrialists. It is a private engineering and management education college affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata.
Currently, the institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in six departments, and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degrees. The Management Education Centre provides Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with various specializations. The various departments that offer undergraduate courses are: Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology.
HIT is a residential institute, providing accommodation to its students, faculty, administrative and supporting staff and their families. Catering to the needs of the burgeoning student population and other on-campus residents are the banks, shopping centers, food joints, and schools etc. which virtually make the campus self-contained. In addition to the basic amenities like telephones, Internet, postal and banking services, the institute provides various support facilities like the library, computer centre, photographic section, electronics centre, and workshops to help students pursue their studies and research without any hindrance. These facilities are centrally located and are open beyond the normal working hours.
The Services of the central library and computer center are some of the services that are heavily used by the students. All these central facilities are well equipped with the necessary infrastructure and headed by a faculty member or a senior administrative staff.
Under the INDEST consortium, the library provides on-line access to a large number of full-text journal databases.
