Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, established in 1974, has completed three decades of as the pioneer institute of Agricultural Education, Research and Extension. The main objective of this Viswavidyalaya is to provide facilities for the study of Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering. It also conducts research in these sciences and undertakes the educational and extension programs in agriculture, keeping in view the requirements of the state.
The University thus has its Main Campus, three Regional Research Stations and three Regional Research Substations. At the same time, the Viswavidyalaya has been strengthened with the creation of two new Faculties of Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering at Mohanpur, taking care of human resource generation in Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering. There is a Medical Investigation Unit (MIU) in the Main Campus to satisfy the health care needs of the students and staff.
The Faculty of Agriculture consists of seventeen departments with specializations in teaching, research and extension for the development of agriculture in this state. One hundred students are admitted each year in the undergraduate courses on the basis of their performance at higher secondary level. The students also undertake one specialized subject along with a job-oriented course in the 6th and 7th semester. Besides, the students undergo the training named ‘Rural Agricultural Work Experience’ (RAWE) during the final semester.
The Central library of BCKV has a collection of 69460 books and 350 Indian Standards. It provides work orientation training to U.G (refreshers) students. This Library is considered as one of the best libraries of agriculture and allied sciences in the country.
