Bengal Engineering & Science University, Howrah was established in 1856, with the idea of introducing engineering education in the country. In 2004, the deemed university was elevated to the status of a University with its present name. The University is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education.
The University offers the following undergraduate courses leading to B.E or B.Arch. degrees: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Tele-Communication Engineering, Information Technology,
Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining Engineering. Post graduate courses leading to Master of Engineering degree are offered in 8 disciplines: Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgy, Mining, Electronics & Tele-Communication, Computer Science & Technology, Engineering Mechanics & Mining and Master of Town & Regional Planning.
The University offers many co-curricular activities. The 1 Bengal Regiment and 4 Bengal Air Squadron have raised one unit each of the senior National Cadet Corps for students of this University. The University has an Athletic Club and has facilities for many outdoor and indoor games and sports. The university has adequate provision for major games such as Cricket and Football in the spacious grounds. There is a cultural club called FOBECS, an acronym for "Forum of BE College Students". This club organizes activities like quizzes, poetry competitions, elocution, and photography exhibitions.
