Association of Indian Universities was formed in 1925 as The Inter-University Board (IUB) of India, with the view of promoting university activities, especially by way of sharing information and co-operation in the field of education, culture, sports and allied areas. In 1973, the Board assumed its present name: The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The membership includes traditional universities, open universities, professional universities, Institutes of National Importance and deemed-to-be universities. In addition, there is a provision of granting Associate Membership to universities of neighboring countries.
The Research Division undertakes research studies on problems and issues related to higher education. A regular activity of the Research Division is to organize workshops and training programs for University administrators. The Division publishes volumes on different themes of higher education under the series “Selections from University News”, and statistical data on various aspects of higher education. The information about the Doctoral Theses awarded by Indian Universities is provided in the regular column "Theses of the Month" in AIU journal "University News".
The Youth Affairs division of AIU organizes Inter-University youth programs on human values, culture, personal development, national integration and international understanding. It holds Inter-University Youth Festivals at zonal and national levels. Over 4000 university youth artistes participate in the Youth Festivals annually. These meets also provide the youth an opportunity to be aware of the historical and cultural heritage of India. Inter-University Home Stay Exchange programs are organized to promote harmony through bilateral exchange. Youth Seminars, Workshops and Conferences are also organized on topics pertaining to youth and their role for development of society and nation.
