Tripura Engineering College was established in 1965. It was initially affiliated to Calcutta University. After the establishment of Tripura University, the college was affiliated to the new University. The college is approved by AICTE. It has recently been identified as a Centre of Excellence by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. It is also one of the five Degree Level Engineering colleges in the whole of the North-Eastern region.
The college offers engineering degree programs in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. From the year 2000, a new four-year degree level course in Computer Science & Engineering has been started. Presently the intake of each branch is increased by 4 of seats for lateral entry candidates (Diploma Level) to second year of under graduate curriculum. The Government of Tripura has also recently applied to AICTE for permission to introduce new degree level courses in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Production Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.
The College has all basic infrastructural facilities for conducting the undergraduate courses satisfactorily. It has a well stocked library, computer facilities with peripherals, workshops and laboratories relevant to the courses of study. Three boys’ hostels having a total accommodation of 300 students are also provided.
The students actively participate in all co-curricular activities like games and sports, debate, quiz, cultural-functions, essay competition, drama competition, rallies on various themes, and NSS programs. Students are encouraged to participate in various academic competitions sponsored by Indian Society for Technical Education, Institution of Engineer and other Institutions.
