Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Mr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu promoted this institute as Vellore Engineering College in the year 1984. The Vellore Engineering College was then affiliated to Madras University. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has ensured accreditation of all the courses offered at the college by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), Government of India.
Vellore Institute of Technology comprises seven schools offering 17 undergraduate programs and 28 post graduate programs. It also offers research programs leading to M.Phil and PhD degrees. The international linkages established by the institute help the students to get global education and training. It has 32 MoUs signed with active participation from countries like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA. Visiting professors participate in the campus workshops and seminars for the benefit of the students.

Connecting students and faculty with global resources of knowledge, the Library responds to the varying needs of the academic community by involving faculty, students, and administration in the development and periodic assessment of library services and resources. The Centre for Sustainable Rural Development & Research Studies at VIT helps to provide physical connectivity of nearby village clusters through quality roads and transport; high bandwidth fiber optic cables, and knowledge connectivity through education and vocational training for farmers. This provides sustainable economy for the rural sector leading to the removal of urban-rural divide.
