University of Madras, Chennai is one of the oldest Universities of Southern India. The University imparts both undergraduate and postgraduate education to the affiliated institutions which are spread over the district of Chennai, Thrivallur and Kanchipuram. The UGC has recognized it as the first centre for potential of excellence in the country.
The University offers teaching and research in 4 campuses. The University Department of Study and Research is organized into 18 Schools. They offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specializations, both part time and full time Ph.D. programs, along with Diploma and Certificate Programs.
The University also offers undergraduate and postgraduate education through the Institute of Correspondence Education (ICE) of the University of Madras. Some of the unique courses offered by ICE are B. Music - Traditional Indian Music, M. Music - Indian Music at Post Graduate level, and M.A. in Vaishnavism and Christian Studies. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology are the main portals at the University.
The National Service Scheme of the University of Madras has a voluntary strength of 18,300 which are spread over in 105 colleges. There are two kinds of programs; Regular Program, which is organized throughout the year, and Special Camping Program, which is organized at the adopted village for ten days. These programs are planned and executed in the light of guidelines framed by the central and state Governments, with the view to develop the personality of the student youth and to develop the community.
